Working fathers feeling constantly guilty: a new epidemic!
What is this thing called parent guilt?. Guilt is self-focused and is about beating ourselves up. By definition, guilt is the fear of retribution. Guilt gnaws at your guts while it tells you “look what you’ve done!”, “what kind of a parent are you?” “you should have known better!”. As a pre-emptive measure against the judgment of our peers, guilt strikes the first blow against ourselves. As guilt becomes hard to bear, it cloaks itself in denial, with rationalizations like “oh, I’m pretty sure he’ll be all right”, or “she is resilient enough”, or “those are just crocodile tears” and so on.
